Dr Ed Johnston is a Consultant in Interventional Oncology at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Biomedical Research Centre, as well as a Group Leader at the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), London. He completed his specialist radiology training at leading London teaching hospitals, including King's College Hospital and The Royal Marsden, before undertaking advanced subspecialty training in interventional oncology.

Dr Johnston's clinical practice encompasses diagnostic radiology, oncological imaging, image-guided biopsy, tumour ablation, and embolisation. He combines a busy clinical workload with an active academic career focused on advancing minimally invasive cancer treatments and integrating innovative technologies into routine clinical practice. He practises privately at The Royal Marsden Hospital and Bupa Cromwell Hospital and also undertakes remote general radiology reporting for 4 Ways.

As Head of the Computer Assisted Interventional Radiology Group at the Institute of Cancer Research, Dr Johnston has led pioneering work in image-guided and robotic interventions. He has developed, implemented, and led the world's largest robotic programme for image-guided biopsy and tumour ablation, helping to establish new standards in precision cancer care. His research focuses on developing and evaluating emerging technologies that improve the accuracy, safety, and effectiveness of interventional oncology procedures.

Committed to advancing the specialty, Dr Johnston is actively involved in teaching, mentoring, and supervising clinicians and researchers at all stages of training. He has established international collaborations to promote innovation in oncological imaging and intervention and regularly contributes to national and international educational programmes.

Dr Johnston is widely recognised as a leader in interventional radiology and oncology. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, is frequently invited to lecture internationally, and has contributed to the development of national clinical guidelines. He has also completed Bond Solon Expert Witness training and maintains a growing medicolegal practice, drawing on extensive experience across NHS, private, and teleradiology settings.
