Profile

Dr James Richardson is a Consultant Cardiologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, with specialist expertise in interventional cardiology and cardiac MRI imaging.

He runs a full-time NHS practice, treating patients with angina, myocardial infarction and a broad range of ischaemic and general cardiology conditions. His clinical practice encompasses advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), and he has performed approximately 10,000 coronary angiograms and more than 3,000 PCI procedures in his career to date.

Dr Richardson serves as PCI Lead for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, one of the highest-volume and most experienced interventional cardiology centres in the UK. In this role, he plays a central part in the development of clinical pathways and treatment guidelines, ensuring services align with the latest recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the European Society of Cardiology. He also has responsibility for clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and the review of clinical outcomes, helping to drive excellence in patient care across the Trust.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Richardson maintains a strong academic and research profile. He was awarded a PhD in Cardiovascular Medicine from the University of Adelaide and has held the position of Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the University of Sheffield since 2014. He is actively involved in cardiovascular research and serves as local Principal Investigator for several large multinational clinical trials. His work has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals, and he is regularly invited to present at national and international scientific meetings.

A committed educator and mentor, Dr Richardson is an accredited educational and clinical supervisor for undergraduate, MD and PhD students and contributes to the appraisal and revalidation of consultant colleagues.

He has undertaken Bond Solon expert witness training and provides independent medicolegal opinions on breach of duty, causation, condition and prognosis in both general and interventional cardiology.
