Dr Shalin Diwanji is a Consultant Physician in Respiratory and General Internal Medicine and Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. Dr Diwanji specialises in adult respiratory medicine, with particular expertise in lung cancer diagnosis and staging, COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, pleural disease, pulmonary embolism, respiratory infections, sleep-disordered breathing, and acute and chronic respiratory failure. He has extensive experience in ventilatory support, including CPAP and non-invasive ventilation, and maintains a high-volume interventional practice, performing more than 250 endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) procedures annually for lung cancer diagnosis and staging.
Alongside his role as Clinical Director, Dr Diwanji is Lung Cancer Lead, Lead Clinician for the Enhanced Respiratory Care Unit and Mortality Lead for Respiratory Medicine. He has played a significant role in developing specialist respiratory services, including establishing the Enhanced Respiratory Care Unit and developing ambulatory pathways for pleural disease, pulmonary embolism and acute respiratory conditions.
His leadership responsibilities encompass clinical governance, mortality review, quality assurance and patient safety, including the structured review of adverse clinical outcomes, investigation of patient-safety incidents and assessment of adherence to national clinical standards.
Dr Diwanji was awarded a Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 2010 for research into non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis and remains actively involved in clinical research. He is Principal Investigator at his Trust for the PHOSP-COVID and RAPID studies and a Sub-Investigator for the TRIBE study.
He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians of London and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and a member of the British Thoracic Society and European Respiratory Society.
Dr Diwanji also has a specialist medico-legal practice in respiratory and general internal medicine. He has undertaken expert-witness training with Bond Solon and British Medical Experts and accepts instructions concerning clinical negligence, breach of duty and causation, condition and prognosis, and personal injury. He provides independent, evidence-based expert opinion within his areas of expertise, in accordance with his overriding duty to the court.
